White Marlin vs Blue Marlin: A Sebastian Angler’s Guide
White marlin and blue marlin can look similar in a quick offshore photograph. Both are billfish with a long upper jaw, a dark back and a pale underside. Their names alone are not a reliable identification test: a white marlin is not simply a white fish, and a blue-looking fish is not necessarily a blue marlin.
Look at the shape of the fins
The rounded front of a white marlin’s dorsal fin is a useful starting point. Blue marlin have a more pointed dorsal fin, and their anal fins are pointed too. Blue marlin can grow substantially larger, but size by itself is not enough to identify a smaller fish. Why one photograph may not settle it
A folded fin, an awkward camera angle or a partly submerged body can hide the features you need. White marlin can also resemble roundscale spearfish. Rather than treating a color impression or a guessed weight as proof, use several visible features and seek an experienced identification when the distinction matters.
