Where We Fish

Fishing Guide in Melbourne

Melbourne's Indian River Lagoon and nearshore Atlantic waters give us incredible variety, from sight-casting snook in skinny water to running offshore for mahi and grouper when conditions line up right.

On the Water

Fishing Melbourne

Melbourne sits right where the Indian River Lagoon opens up wide and deep, with countless mangrove islands, grass flats, and oyster bars holding fish year-round. I run charters out of this area because the diversity is unmatched. We can work the backcountry for snook around structure and moving water, or when the weather window opens, we push offshore to the reefs and wrecks where grouper and snapper stack up. The Lagoon here has that perfect mix of current flow and structure that concentrates bait, and when the bait shows up, so do the predators.

Summer is prime time for snook in Melbourne. We fish the mangrove edges early and late in the day when the water cools down a bit, targeting deeper pockets and current breaks during midday heat. Offshore, summer also brings mahi within reasonable range when the weedlines set up right and water temps climb into the low 80s. Fall and winter shift our focus more to the backcountry, where snook get aggressive before and after cold fronts, and we pick up quality snapper and grouper on the nearshore structure when the ocean lays down. Spring is transition time, with snook starting their spawn pattern and grouper biting well before their season closes.

A Melbourne fishing trip with me means reading the conditions that morning and making the call. If the wind is down and the forecast is clean, we might run out to 80 feet and drop baits on structure for grouper and mangrove snapper. If the ocean is angry or you want a more protected day, we stay inside the Lagoon and work the flats and channels for snook. Either way, you're fishing water I know intimately, and we adjust tactics throughout the day based on what the fish are telling us. Melbourne gives us options, and that's what makes guiding here so productive.

Fishing Melbourne FAQ

What's the best time of year to fish Melbourne?
Melbourne fishes well year-round because of the variety. Summer is peak for snook in the backcountry and mahi offshore when conditions align. Fall and winter are excellent for snook around structure changes and for grouper and snapper on the nearshore reefs when the ocean calms down. Spring brings pre-spawn snook activity and solid grouper fishing before the season closes. I adjust our approach based on what's biting best when you're here.
Do we fish the Indian River Lagoon or go offshore?
It depends on the weather, the season, and what you want to catch. If you're after snook or want a protected trip, we stay in the Lagoon and work the mangroves, flats, and channels. If conditions are right and you want to target grouper, snapper, or mahi, we run offshore to the reefs and weedlines. I make the call based on the forecast and the bite, and we can discuss your preferences when you book.
What species do you target on a Melbourne charter?
I focus on snook in the backcountry waters around Melbourne, working the mangrove edges and current breaks where they feed. Offshore, we target grouper and mangrove snapper on structure, and when the conditions and season are right, we run for mahi in the blue water. Every trip is tailored to what's biting and what the conditions allow, so you're always fishing with a solid game plan.
